Is sparkling water healthy?

Posted on: 13/02/19 Posted by: Sidrah Ahmad

The health benefits of sparkling water include all the benefits of drinking water and, of course, proper hydration tops the list. Did you know water supports your body in many ways?

  • It lubricates the joints
  • It delivers oxygen to the cells
  • It helps us to regulate your body temperature
  • It aids efficient digestion of food

Here are some less obvious sparkling water health benefits.

Sparkling water treats constipation and dyspepsia

Have you ever enjoyed a drink of sparkling water to settle your stomach? It turns out, you’re in good company. There’s scientific evidence to back up the positive effects. A research report shared by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that sparkling water reduces dyspepsia, also known as indigestion and eases constipation. The cherry on top? Sparkling water also improves gall bladder emptying, and a gall bladder that empties well is less likely to develop gallstones.

Sparkling water does not cause calcium depletion

Claims that drinking soda and soft drinks can leach calcium from your bones and decrease bone density made a lot of people worry that drinking sparkling water would have the same effect. However, the bubbles are not the root of the problem and while the jury is out, most experts argue that it’s either the phosphoric acid or the caffeine in the soda that’s to blame. Sparkling water contains neither of these ingredients.

Sparkling water is not bad for your teeth

The American Dental Association (ADA) published a research article on the pH values of popular beverages. The verdict? Sparkling water is the least of your dental concerns. Speaking to the New York Times in 2016, one of the study’s authors confirmed the pH of most sparkling waters didn’t cross the tooth enamel erosion danger-zone. He sets the threshold for tooth erosion at a pH of lower than 4. Well-known soft drinks have a pH of around 2.4. Sparkling water has an average pH of 5. This is above the low pH levels that are likely to harm your teeth.
